    Directions:
    A Short Veterans' Day History
November 11, is the anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I, after four years of conflict. It was signed in the Forest of Compiegne by the Allies and the Germans in 1918.
In 1919 President Woodrow Wilson wrote in the final paragraph of his Armistice Day proclamation: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation."
The name "Armistice Day" was changed to Veterans' Day by Act of Congress on May 24, 1954.
